AEW Dynamite Review - Jan 1, 2020
Hits:
✅Cody vs Darby Allin - It was an exciting way to kick off the first episode of AEW Dynamite in 2020. Match of the Night
✅ Taz on commentary - The Human Suplex Machine deserves definite praise for his stellar promise and his chemistry with Jim Ross, in particular, stood out to me.
✅Jon Moxley vs Trent - This was an excellent showcase for Trent and Jon Moxley continues to remind me of a modern-day Terry Funk. He's wild, unpredictable and a legitimate badass who exemplifies cool.
Psychology 101: Sammy Guevara shows up and Jon Moxley assumes the remainder of the Inner Circle will follow suit, so he immediately runs outside of the ring to grab a chair. It's the little details that matter.
✅Jericho's Proposal - While there's little doubt Moxley will decline the offer, Jericho's promos and vignettes remain some of the best parts of each episode.
✅MJF's Stipulations - During Picture in Picture, MJF is provoking fans while forcing others to kiss his ring. As expected, he's generating great heat. Mature beyond his years. His stipulations were straight out of the book of old-school heelish and the delivery was great.
✅The Elite vs Lucha Bros and Pac - The match was undeniably captivating, but the Lucha Bros and the Young Bucks require some much-needed space.
✅Women's Fatal Four Way - Pretty enthralling and a noticeable improvement over the vast majority of the women's division matches in recent weeks.
✅Sammy Guevara vs Dustin Rhodes - A solid effort from both competitors that further progresses the story between Dustin and Jake Hager with his interference.
Misses:
❌Lack of Psychology - This is more of a complaint associated with the landscape of modern-day wrestling, but the main event suffered from too many moves and not enough selling. It becomes overkill which leads to the high impact moves meaning far less than they should.
❌Riho Retains - Perhaps it's just me, but I haven't enjoyed Riho's title reign. Her appearances have been quite sporadic and still, she hasn't fully connected with the audience or discovered her character.
I'm sure we can collectively agree that this was undoubtedly one of the strongest episodes of AEW Dynamite in weeks. It was remarkably good.
